Noh
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre
Noh is the classical music theatre of Japan, with masked actors, a chorus and a small ensemble. In 1374 the young shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu saw a performance by Kan'ami and his son Zeami and became their patron; Zeami then wrote dozens of plays and the theory of the genre. The ensemble, the hayashi, consists of the nohkan, a bamboo flute, and three drums. The drummers let out long cries between their strokes, and these belong to the music just as much.
Listening
Listening tip. In Hagoromo, listen to what happens between the drum strokes: the players' long cries help to shape the rhythm.
