Gagaku
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre
Gagaku is the court music of Japan, adopted from China and Korea and, since 701, supervised by a department of its own at the imperial court. It is regarded as the oldest living orchestral tradition in the world. The sho, a mouth organ with seventeen bamboo pipes, lays down floating chords, the hichiriki, a small double-reed oboe, plays the melody, and drums mark the slow tempo. The best-known piece is Etenraku, and since 2009 gagaku has been on UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage.
Listening
Listening tip. Listen to this choshi, a short free prelude, for the way the sho sounds slowly swelling chords before the other wind instruments join in.
