French Baroque · At the court of Louis XIV, music became an instrument of power. Jean-Baptiste Lully, born in Florence, became court composer in 1661, led a string orchestra known for its tight ensemble playing and, from 1673, wrote French operas full of dance. François Couperin refined harpsichord playing with small character pieces, and in Les Indes galantes (1735) Jean-Philippe Rameau put daring harmonies on the stage. Typically French were the dance rhythms and the rich ornamentation.
