Azerbaijani mugham
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre
Azerbaijani mugham · Mugham is the classical modal music of Azerbaijan, related to the Persian dastgah. A singer, the khanende, plays the frame drum daf himself and is accompanied by the tar, a long-necked lute, and the kamancha, a violin-like bowed instrument. Much is improvised on the spot, which is why masters teach it directly to pupils. In the nineteenth century Shusha became the centre, called the conservatory of the Caucasus. Alim Qasimov is the best-known singer today.
Listening
Listening tip. Alim Qasimov sings the beginning of the mugham Bayati Shiraz, with Malik Mansurov on the tar. Notice the voice: how quickly it trills and breaks the note in the ornaments, and how the tar answers it.
