Malik Mansurov

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Malik Mansurov is an Azerbaijani player of the tar, the long-necked lute that forms the heart of the classical music of Azerbaijan. His albums show where he feels at home. Azerbaïdjan: Chants du Grand Caucase from 2001 presents songs from the Caucasus, The Dastgahs of Azerbaijani Music: The Art of Muqam from 2016 belongs to the great form of the mugham, and Azerbaïdjan: The Tar of Malik Mänsurov puts his instrument at the centre.

Music and breakthrough

The mugham is a classical tradition with long, free improvisations within fixed modes, the dastgahs. A singer and a tar player alternate in long pieces that build up slowly. The tar, with its clear, string-rich sound, provides the melody and the rhythm of the piece.

Influence

Nothing was found in our sources about Mansurov's life. The Wikipedia page that went with the name is about Eldar Mansurov, a composer from Baku, and that is a different person. This text therefore stays with what the albums show. The editors still have to add the biography.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to a piece on the tar by Malik Mansurov and notice the clear sound of the instrument. Can you hear how a short melody is played around and slowly expanded?
