Victoria Beckham

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Victoria Beckham was born Victoria Adams in 1974 in Harlow, Essex, and grew up in Hertfordshire. After seeing the musical film Fame in 1980, she decided to go into music. She studied dance and modelling at Laine Theatre Arts in Epsom. In the 1990s she became known as a member of the Spice Girls, in which she was called Posh Spice. The group came out of auditions and, after a change shortly afterwards, consisted of five singers: Geri Halliwell, Melanie Brown, Emma Bunton, Melanie Chisholm and Victoria Adams.

Music and breakthrough

After the Spice Girls split up in 2000, she signed to Virgin Records and in 2001 released her first solo album, Victoria Beckham, with two singles in the British top ten. Her solo career as a singer remained limited to that. She married the footballer David Beckham and appeared in a series of television documentaries, including Being Victoria Beckham in 2002 and a Netflix documentary in 2025.

Influence

In 2008 she started a fashion label of her own, which in 2011 was named designer brand of the year in England. She grew into an internationally recognised style icon and in 2017 received an honour as Officer of the Order of the British Empire. Her career shows how a pop group from the 1990s could produce a household name that reaches far beyond music.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to a single by the Spice Girls, such as Wannabe. Notice how the singers take turns singing a line and how you can hear each voice playing a role of its own.
