Turnstile
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Turnstile is an American rock band from Baltimore, Maryland, formed in 2010. The group emerged from the city's hardcore scene and consists of singer Brendan Yates, guitarists Pat McCrory and Meg Mills, bassist Franz Lyons and drummer Daniel Fang. After two EPs, Pressure to Succeed in 2011 and Step 2 Rhythm in 2013, the debut album Nonstop Feeling was released in 2015. In 2018 came Time & Space, their first album on a major label.
Music and breakthrough
The breakthrough came in 2021 with Glow On. The album was highly praised by critics, received three Grammy nominations and ranked high in Rolling Stone's end-of-year lists. The fourth album, Never Enough from 2025, reached the top ten in five countries, including the United States. With it the band won the Grammy for best rock album in 2026, and with the song Birds the one for best metal performance.
Influence
Turnstile began as a hardcore band but looked for more melody and colour than the genre usually allows. The sound remains hard and fast, with heavy guitars and a tight rhythm section, but there is room for vocals that stick in the mind. In this way the band fits into School of Rock's story of rock becoming popular again: while Måneskin won the Eurovision Song Contest and Olivia Rodrigo brought pop-punk to the charts, a hardcore band was also filling large venues again.
