Måneskin
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Måneskin is an Italian rock band that formed in Rome in 2016. Singer Damiano David, bassist Victoria De Angelis and guitarist Thomas Raggi knew each other from secondary school; drummer Ethan Torchio joined via an advertisement on Facebook. The name is Danish for moonlight: De Angelis is half Danish, and the others asked her for a few Danish words. The band won a local competition for beginning groups and then played as street musicians in Rome, including on the Via del Corso.
Music and breakthrough
In 2017 Måneskin came second in the Italian version of X Factor. There they played covers such as Beggin' by The Four Seasons and Take Me Out by Franz Ferdinand. The first album Il ballo della vita (2018), with the ballad Torna a casa, went to number 1 in Italy. In 2021 the band won the Sanremo festival with Zitti e buoni, and with it they were able to represent Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest in Rotterdam. They won, as the first rock band since Lordi in 2006. They then broke through all over Europe and America, with Zitti e buoni, I Wanna Be Your Slave and their version of Beggin'. They played as the opening act for The Rolling Stones. Rush! was released in 2023, and since 2024 the band has been on hold.
Influence
Måneskin plays hard-hitting guitar rock with influences from glam and hard rock, and the band attracts attention with an exuberant, androgynous image. Their success showed that in the 2020s rock could still reach a large, young audience.
