SWR Rundfunkorchester Kaiserslautern

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

The SWR Rundfunkorchester Kaiserslautern was a German radio orchestra from Kaiserslautern, attached to the public broadcaster Südwestrundfunk, the broadcaster for the south-west of Germany. That broadcaster came into being on 1 January 1998 from the merger of Südwestfunk in Baden-Baden and Süddeutscher Rundfunk in Stuttgart. The orchestra then came under the SWR and took the name of the broadcaster.

Music and breakthrough

The orchestra is known above all for record recordings of classical repertoire, often with soloists and with lesser-known composers alongside the great names. The list of recordings includes Clarinet Concertos (2005), Complete Piano Concertos (2007), Swedish & Russian Dances (2008) and Violin Concertos 15, 18 & 19 (2009). There was also a release of Peter und der Wolf with excerpts from fairy-tale operas.

Influence

Radio orchestras of this kind played an important role in German musical culture: they recorded concerts for the radio, supported soloists and released repertoire that commercial labels often left aside. The recordings of this orchestra sound polished and clear, without great effects, and are valuable above all as documentation of the broad classical tradition.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to a recording of Peter und der Wolf and notice how each character has its own instrument, so that you can follow the story by the sound.
