Shirley Walker
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Shirley Walker (1945–2006) was a pianist who for years worked as an orchestrator and conductor for other composers, among them Danny Elfman on Batman (1989). For Batman: The Animated Series (1992) she became head composer and musical director. She led a team of composers and had every episode recorded with a real orchestra, which was rare for animated series. Every villain was given a theme of his own. For the feature film Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (1993) she wrote a gothic score with choir. She was one of the first women to score a major Hollywood film as sole composer. Later she also wrote horror music, for example for Final Destination (2000).
