Rotterdam Termination Source

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Rotterdam Termination Source is a Dutch gabber and hardcore group from Rotterdam formed around the producer Maurice Steenbergen, at first together with Danny Scholte. The duo is regarded as one of the pioneers of Dutch gabber house fury. It began around 1991 and released on Rotterdam Records, the label that Paul Elstak founded in 1992 and which is regarded as the first hardcore label in the world.

Music and breakthrough

The biggest hit was Poing, from 1992. The track is almost bare: a hard, stomping beat with one characteristic sound, the poing, that keeps returning. There is not much more to it than that, and precisely that simplicity made it so effective on the dance floor. It became a hit in the Netherlands and Denmark and also entered the British chart. The football supporters of West Bromwich Albion are said to have based their Boing Boing chant on it. In 1993 came the Christmas record Merry X-Mess, which also made the chart in Great Britain, and more EPs appeared later. In 2007 a jumpstyle version of Poing was released.

Influence

The music belongs to the first years of Dutch hardcore: hard, fast and tongue in cheek. Poing showed that a track built from one sound and one rhythm could be enough to carry a whole country along. Steenbergen later worked, among other things, on Paul Elstak's music videos.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Poing and count how often the poing sound returns. Notice how little changes in the track and how the beat keeps driving forward all the same.
