From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

PSY · Psy is the stage name of Park Jae-sang, a South Korean singer, songwriter and producer, born on 31 December 1977 in the Gangnam district of Seoul. He came from a wealthy family and was known at school as the class clown. At fifteen a Korean TV broadcast introduced him to Western pop music, through the concert video Queen Live at Wembley Stadium. In 1996 he began a business studies course in Boston, intended to prepare him to take over his father's company. He preferred to spend his money on a keyboard, a computer and a MIDI interface, and abandoned the course.

Music and breakthrough

His debut album Psy from the Psycho World! appeared in 2001. The worldwide breakthrough came in 2012 with Gangnam Style, a single that reached the top ten of the American Billboard Hot 100 and became a viral sensation. It was the first video on YouTube with a billion views and remained the most-watched video from November 2012 until July 2017. Its successor Gentleman from 2013 also reached the top ten, and the video broke the record for the most viewers in the first twenty-four hours. He founded the talent agency P Nation and received a Korean cultural award.
