Paul Epworth

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Paul Epworth was born in 1974 in Bishop's Stortford and is an English producer and musician. He began as the singer and guitarist of the band Lomax from 2002 to 2004 and made remixes under the name Phones, with which he attracted attention through his remix of Bloc Party's Banquet. His first real production work came in 2004 and 2005, with, among others, Bloc Party's Silent Alarm and Maxïmo Park's A Certain Trigger, two albums that were nominated for the Mercury Music Prize, and the debut by The Futureheads.

Music and breakthrough

His breakthrough as a writer and producer came in 2007 with Kate Nash's Made of Bricks, on which he co-wrote Foundations. In 2009 he co-produced Lungs, the debut album by Florence and the Machine, featuring Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up). Later he worked with Adele and Rihanna, and for Skyfall he won an Oscar for best original song. He won three Brit Awards as best British producer, the last in 2015, and seven Grammys. In 2020 he released his own debut album Voyager.

Influence

Epworth founded the independent label Wolf Tone, which released music by Glass Animals and The Horrors. He is a good example of the producer who became ever more important in pop history: he co-writes, shapes the sound and gives records their character.
