Nous'che Rosenberg

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Nous'che Rosenberg is the rhythm guitarist of the Rosenberg Trio, a Dutch jazz group strongly influenced by Django Reinhardt, the Gypsy jazz guitarist of the 1930s. The trio further consists of lead guitarist Stochelo Rosenberg and bassist Nonnie Rosenberg. Nous'che and Nonnie are sons of Sani Rosenberg, a musician from the Dutch Sinti community. In a very musical family they grew up with the music of Django Reinhardt.

Music and breakthrough

Nous'che began playing with his cousin and friend Stochelo when the latter was about ten years old. Both own Selmer guitars: Nous'che a model with a D-shaped sound hole, Stochelo a model with an oval sound hole, the type that Django Reinhardt preferred. The exact date on which the trio began under that name is not known, but the first album, Seresta, appeared in 1989. In 1992 came the live album The Rosenberg Trio: Live at the North Sea Jazz Festival, on which the trio can be heard at a distinctive and youthful peak. In 2010 Djangologists appeared, a DVD with a tribute to Django Reinhardt. The trio played with other influential musicians, such as Angelo Debarre, Romane, Bireli Lagrene and Peter Beets.

Influence

In Gypsy jazz the rhythm guitar is the foundation: with a tight, continuous attack it keeps the music moving, while the soloist can let the melody float freely. Nous'che Rosenberg fills that role in a group that has kept the tradition of Django Reinhardt alive in the Netherlands.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to a recording by the Rosenberg Trio and notice the rhythm guitar: the pulsing attack that runs beneath everything. Hear how the lead guitar can play freely above it.
