Mohammad-Reza Shajarian
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Mohammad-Reza Shajarian was born in Mashhad and became the most important singer of Persian classical music. He mastered the old ornaments of the avaz, the free singing of Persian poetry, down to the smallest tremor. His sung prayer Rabbana was heard every year during Ramadan on Iranian radio from 1979. After the elections of 2009 he sided with the protesters, after which the state broadcaster banned his music.
Listening
Listening tip. Listen in the concert with the tar player Mohammad Reza Lotfi to how the voice and the tar alternate: the tar repeats and answers what Shajarian has just sung.
