Mirjam Timmer
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Mirjam Timmer is a Dutch singer-songwriter, born on 1 July 1982 in Leeuwarden. She comes from the Frisian village of Wergea, where she was already writing songs as a child. Together with fellow villager Johan van der Veen she took part in talent contests under the name Twarres. This led in 2000 to a number 1 hit in the Netherlands and Flanders with Wêr Bisto, a song in Frisian. The singles She Couldn't Laugh, Children and I Need To Know followed. The debut album Stream went platinum, and a second album, CD², was released later.
Music and breakthrough
In 2003 Timmer wrote the music for the Frisian-language musical De lêste brief. Later that year she and Van der Veen decided to stop as a duo. A fall down some stairs, in which she broke her arm in 2004, meant for some time that she could not play guitar. She then worked with the producers John Themis and Gregor Hamilton in London on her solo debut.
Influence
From 2006 she performed solo under the name Mir, short for Mirjam. The first single Face to Face became a modest hit. Then came The Deep Blue Sea, on which she sings with Jim Kerr, the singer of Simple Minds. The solo album is called Files From London. Since 2015 she has been performing again as Twarres, with two new band members. Her career shows how a regional language in the Netherlands could become a national hit.
