Mandy Moore

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Mandy Moore is an American singer, songwriter and actress. She was born in Nashua, New Hampshire, in 1984 and grew up in Florida, near Orlando. As a child she wanted to sing and act, and she played leading roles in local productions. At twelve she went to a performing arts summer camp, Stagedoor Manor. Her British grandmother had been a professional ballerina in London, and she found that an inspiration.

Music and breakthrough

In 1999 she broke through with her debut single Candy. The album So Real from the same year was certified platinum. I Wanna Be with You from 2000 became her first single in the American top forty. Mandy Moore in 2001 and Coverage in 2003, an album of covers, followed. With Wild Hope in 2007 and Amanda Leigh in 2009 she moved more towards the singer-songwriter side, later came Silver Landings from 2020 and In Real Life from 2022. Her music began as teen pop and gradually became more grown-up and personal.

Influence

At the same time she built a film career, with, among others, A Walk to Remember from 2002 and the voice of Rapunzel in Tangled from 2010. From 2016 to 2022 she played Rebecca Pearson in the series This Is Us. In 2019 she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Her career is an example of the teen pop of around 2000.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Candy and notice the light, danceable teen pop sound. Then compare it with a track from Wild Hope and hear how her voice becomes calmer and more personal.
