Lukáš Vasilek

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Lukáš Vasilek is a Czech musician who works mainly with choral and vocal music. He is named as chorus master on the 2014 recording of Leoš Janáček's Glagolitic Mass. It was released on Supraphon, with the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Prague Philharmonic Choir under Tomáš Netopil.

Music and breakthrough

Of his own recordings the album listings name Testamentum, with choral works, from 2014, Cantatas and Madrigals from 2018, Village Stories from 2023 and Honegger: Jeanne d'Arc au bûcher from 2026. That is a broad repertoire, from madrigals and cantatas to a twentieth-century oratorio.

Influence

The Glagolitic Mass shows what such a choral work demands. Janáček wrote it in 1926 for soloists, double choir, organ and orchestra, to a text in Old Church Slavonic. The piece begins and ends with a brass fanfare and contains, in between, an organ solo full of energy. The work is a celebration of Slavic culture and is still often performed today. In pop history it stands far from the charts, but it belongs to the great choral music of the twentieth century, with which the course sketches the music of the century.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to the organ solo in Janáček's Glagolitic Mass and notice the wild, continuous motion. Can you hear how the choir then comes back in?
