From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Klaus Doldinger was born in 1936 in Berlin. At the Düsseldorf conservatoire he studied piano and later clarinet, then musicology. He became known as a jazz saxophonist. In 1971 he founded the band Passport, which was sometimes called the European counterpart of Weather Report. Besides saxophone he played keyboards and synthesizer. For television he wrote the theme music of the crime series Tatort in 1970, which is still used today. His music for Wolfgang Petersen's Das Boot (1981), about the crew of a German submarine, became known internationally. For Die unendliche Geschichte (1984) he wrote the score, together with Giorgio Moroder. Doldinger died in 2025.

Listening

Listening tip. In Das Boot, notice the heavy, pulsing synthesizer bass beneath a broad theme, and in Tatort the jazz saxophone above a tight rhythm.
