Jet

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Jet is an Australian rock band from Melbourne, formed in 2001 by the brothers Nic and Chris Cester together with the guitarist Cameron Muncey. A year later the bassist Mark Wilson joined. The brothers grew up on their father's records: classic rock from the 1960s and 1970s. Among their influences they count the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Faces, AC/DC and T. Rex. Nic sang and played rhythm guitar, Chris drummed.

Music and breakthrough

At the end of 2002 the EP Dirty Sweet appeared on their own label. The first pressing of a thousand copies sold out quickly. A writer for the NME heard in the song Take It or Leave It a mixture of the Rolling Stones and AC/DC. Elektra signed the band. The debut album Get Born was recorded in 2003 in Los Angeles with the producer Dave Sardy, with Billy Preston on keyboards on two tracks. The album reached number one in Australia. The single Are You Gonna Be My Girl became their biggest hit. The Rolling Stones asked Jet to support them on the Australian leg of their tour, and at the 2004 ARIA Music Awards the band won six prizes.

Influence

Shine On followed in 2006 and Shaka Rock in 2009, both in the Australian top five. In 2012 the group stopped, but later it came together again. Jet stands for a return to straightforward guitar rock in the early 2000s, with a sound that explicitly referred to the classics of thirty years earlier.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Are You Gonna Be My Girl and notice the guitar riff that opens the track and how the drums and the vocals stomp through it, raw and straight.
