Jan Pijnenburg

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Jan Pijnenburg is a Dutch drummer, born in Vught in 1955. After an unfinished course in graphic design, he trained as a pop music teacher at the conservatoire in Rotterdam. He played in numerous bands, including Lucifer, where he succeeded Henny Huisman, Hollander and Long Tall Ernie and the Shakers. Just before joining Doe Maar he was still touring Germany with a rock band.

Music and breakthrough

In 1982 he succeeded René van Collem as drummer of Doe Maar, the band that mixed punk, ska and reggae with Dutch lyrics and became enormously popular in those years. Pijnenburg had played only one concert with the group when, in April 1982, on the way to the second gig, he was in a serious car accident. He needed more than half a year to recover, and Van Collem temporarily took his place again. On the album 4us (1983) a drum machine can therefore be heard on a number of tracks, such as Nachtzuster, Pa and Heroïne. On the live album Lijf aan lijf (1983) Pijnenburg does play himself.

Influence

After Doe Maar broke up in 1984 he drummed in, among others, The Magnificent 7, with Henny Vrienten, and in a new version of Shocking Blue. At the Doe Maar reunion in 2000 he played on the album Klaar and at the concerts in Ahoy, the Rotterdam arena, and in 2008 at the shows in De Kuip, the Rotterdam football stadium. Later he settled in Spain, where he has a studio.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Pa by Doe Maar, from the album 4us (1983). Notice the tight, mechanical beat of the drum machine and compare it with the loose, living drumming on a live recording by the band.
