Herbert Stothart

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Herbert Stothart was born in Milwaukee in 1885 and came from Broadway, where he wrote and conducted operettas, including Rose-Marie (1924) together with Rudolf Friml. In 1929 he joined MGM and was its musical director there for years. The Rogue Song (1930), with the opera singer Lawrence Tibbett, was an early musical film in colour. Stothart worked in the style of late Romanticism: lots of strings, familiar melodies as quotation, and music that doubles the emotion of a scene. He wrote the score for Mutiny on the Bounty (1935). For The Wizard of Oz (1939) he wove Harold Arlen's songs into his orchestral music and won an Oscar. His work typifies the smooth studio sound of MGM.

Listening tip. Notice how song melodies such as 'Over the Rainbow' return in the orchestra as themes that announce characters and places.
