Harry Warren

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Harry Warren (1893–1981) was born Salvatore Guaragna in Brooklyn and taught himself music. In the 1930s he wrote, with the lyricist Al Dubin, the songs for the Warner Bros. musicals for which Busby Berkeley created the big dance numbers. In 42nd Street (1933) and Gold Diggers of 1933 you hear optimistic songs such as We're in the Money, in the middle of the economic crisis. Later he wrote Chattanooga Choo Choo for 20th Century Fox, played by Glenn Miller in Sun Valley Serenade (1941). For MGM came The Harvey Girls (1946). He won three Oscars for best song, but his name remained less well known than his melodies.

Listening

Listening tip. Notice the tight song form with a catchy chorus and how the swinging accompaniment imitates the movement of a train or a dance troupe.
