Flume

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Flume is the stage name of Harley Edward Streten, an Australian musician, DJ and producer, born in 1991 in Sydney. He grew up on the Northern Beaches. His father is a film-maker and producer, his mother a horticulturalist. At eleven he began making music with a simple DJ program that came in a box of cornflakes. It showed him how music is built up in layers. In 2010 he made house under the name HEDS. He got his first radio play with Possum, which he put on Triple J Unearthed. In 2011 he signed to the label Future Classic through a competition and released the EP Sleepless. He chose the name Flume after a song by Bon Iver.

Music and breakthrough

His first album, Flume, was released in 2012 and topped the Australian album chart. Skin followed in 2016, also number one in Australia, and in 2017 won a Grammy for best dance/electronic album. The single Never Be Like You was nominated for best dance recording. After that came Skin Companion EP 1 and 2, the mixtape Hi This Is Flume in 2019, Palaces in 2022 and the mixtapes Things Don't Always Go the Way You Plan and Arrived Anxious, Left Bored in 2023. He remixed Lorde, Sam Smith, Arcade Fire and Disclosure, among others.

Influence

Flume is regarded as a pioneer of future bass, a style with warped synthesizers, heavy bass and chopped vocal samples. He helped make that genre popular. His music shows how a bedroom producer from Australia gained worldwide influence on electronic pop music.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Never Be Like You from Skin and notice how the sampled vocals are chopped up and worked into the beat, with heavy bass and glittering synthesizers.
