Fab Morvan
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Fabrice Morvan, Fab Morvan for short, is a French singer, dancer, rapper and model, born in Paris in 1966. His parents came from Pointe-à-Pitre in Guadeloupe. At eighteen he moved to Germany, where he worked as a dancer and model and was influenced by funk, soul, hip hop and pop. In a nightclub in Munich he met Rob Pilatus, and together they decided to form a rock and soul group.
Music and breakthrough
The producer Frank Farian discovered them and had them perform as Milli Vanilli. They were the face of the singers Charles Shaw, John Davis and Brad Howell, whom Farian considered talented but who, in his view, lacked a marketable image. The first album, Girl You Know It's True from 1989, was popular worldwide and produced four hits: the title song, Girl I'm Gonna Miss You, Baby Don't Forget My Number and Blame It on the Rain. On 22 February 1990 the group won a Grammy for best new artist. Rumours of lip-syncing spread and on 15 November 1990 Farian himself announced that Morvan and Pilatus had not sung. The Grammy was withdrawn four days later and Arista removed the album from its catalogue, making it the best-selling album ever to be taken off the market.
Influence
After that the duo continued in the 1990s as Rob & Fab, with limited success. Morvan returned in the 2000s with the solo album Love Revolution in 2003. His name stands for one of the greatest scandals in pop history and for the question of what authenticity in pop music means.
