Diabolus in Musica

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Diabolus in Musica is a French ensemble for medieval music, founded in 1992 in Paris and based in Tours. Its leader is Antoine Guerber, who studied medieval music with Dominique Vellard at the Centre de Musique Médiévale de Paris and at the Conservatoire National Supérieur in Lyon.

Music and breakthrough

The ensemble specialises in music from the Middle Ages and the early Renaissance. Its records begin in 1997 with La Chambre des Dames and Manuscrits de Tours. They cover songs of the trouvères, the polyphony of the Notre-Dame school in Paris in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, crusade songs and political songs from the years 1188 to 1250, and church music such as the Missa Magna from papal Avignon. The group also recorded work by Johannes Ockeghem, Jean Mouton and Pierre de la Rue, up to and including Reine du Ciel in 2021.

Influence

In this way the group brings a distant past back to life: the song art of the trouvères and early polyphony, long before there was any such thing as pop music.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to a trouvère song on La doce acordance. Notice how a song from the Middle Ages sounds without modern instruments.
