Antoine Guerber
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Antoine Guerber is a French musician who directs the ensemble Diabolus in Musica. This ensemble for medieval music was founded in Paris in 1992 and is based in Tours. Guerber studied medieval music with Dominique Vellard at the Centre de Musique Médiévale in Paris and in the early music department of the Conservatoire National Supérieur in Lyon.
Music and breakthrough
With his ensemble he made recordings covering a broad stretch of the Middle Ages. Examples are La Chambre des Dames from 1997, Missa Magna from 1999, with a Mass from the papal chapel at Avignon in the fourteenth century, and Carmina Gallica from 2002, with Latin songs from the twelfth century. Next came Honi soit qui mal y pense! with polyphonic music from the English royal chapels, Missa Se la face ay pale in 2004, La doce acordance with songs by trouvères in 2005, and Paris expers Paris, about the Notre-Dame school, 1170 to 1240, in 2006.
Influence
Guerber thus makes music that arose long before modern pop: sung songs of the trouvères, early polyphony and the Mass. His ensemble shows how alive this old music can sound when singers perform it with knowledge of the sources.
