Dave Tarras
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Dave Tarras was born around 1895 in Teplyk in Ukraine and emigrated to New York in 1921. There he became the most sought-after clarinettist for Jewish weddings, radio and records, with an estimated 500 recordings. His playing was elegant and restrained, the opposite of that of Naftule Brandwein, and he made the bulgar rhythm popular. When the klezmer revival began, he taught young musicians such as Andy Statman.
Listening
Listening tip. Listen to Hopkele from 1928 and compare it with Brandwein: Tarras ornaments just as richly, but his tone stays round and his rhythm tight.
