Dario Marianelli

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Dario Marianelli was born in Pisa and studied in Florence. In 1990 he moved to London. There he took a postgraduate course in composition at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and then spent three years at the National Film and Television School, from which he graduated in 1997. From 1994 he wrote for film. He often works with the director Joe Wright, including on Pride & Prejudice (2005), Atonement (2007) and Anna Karenina (2012). In Atonement the sound of a manual typewriter is clearly part of the soundtrack. For that score he received an Oscar and a Golden Globe in 2008. Pride & Prejudice and Anna Karenina earned Oscar nominations. He also wrote, among others, V for Vendetta (2006), Jane Eyre (2011) and Darkest Hour (2017).

Listening

Listening tip. Notice how in Atonement the tapping of a typewriter joins in as a rhythm with piano and strings, and how Anna Karenina is built on a waltz movement.
