Cherie Currie

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Cherie Currie was born in 1959 and grew up in Encino, California. She is an American singer, musician, actress and artist. With her twin sister Marie she appeared on television as a child and later danced as a background dancer on American Bandstand. In 1975, at the age of fifteen, she joined The Runaways, an all-girl rock band from Los Angeles. Her bandmates were Joan Jett, Lita Ford, Sandy West, Jackie Fox and Vicki Blue. The magazine Bomp! described her as the lost daughter of Iggy Pop and Brigitte Bardot.

Music and breakthrough

With The Runaways she recorded three albums: The Runaways, Queens of Noise and Live In Japan. After the third album she left the group, at the age of seventeen. To fulfil her contract she made the solo album Beauty's Only Skin Deep. She then performed in clubs in Los Angeles, where her sister Marie sometimes joined her on stage. Together they recorded the album Messin' With The Boys as Cherie & Marie Currie, whose best-known song was Since You Been Gone, a cover of a song by Russ Ballard. In 1980 she also appeared in the film Foxes. Later she released further albums, such as Reverie in 2015.

Influence

Currie was the face of one of the first rock bands of young women. Her performance showed that in the 1970s girls could sound just as hard and raw as the male rock bands, even though her group did not always receive appreciation for it.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Since You Been Gone by Cherie & Marie Currie and notice how the two sisters sing together. Try to hear what distinguishes this calmer rock sound from the rawer style of The Runaways.
