Camarón de la Isla

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Camarón de la Isla, born José Monje Cruz into a gitano family in San Fernando near Cádiz, made nine albums with Paco de Lucía between 1969 and 1977. With La leyenda del tiempo (1979) he broke with tradition: electric bass, rock influences and lyrics by Federico García Lorca. Purists were angry, but the album became a foundation for nuevo flamenco. An estimated 100,000 people came to his funeral.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to La Leyenda del Tiempo and hear how his hoarse flamenco voice sounds above an electric bass and drums.
