Boh Foi Toch

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Boh Foi Toch is an Achterhoek band that formed in August 1989. The name means something like 'goodness me, what a thing'. Jan Manschot left Normaal in early 1989 and really no longer wanted to drum. When he was asked whether Hans Keuper could play at a wedding party, the two performed as a duo. They liked it, and Manschot phoned the guitarist Ferdi Joly, who brought along the bassist Willem te Molder. The first official performance was on 1 January 1990 at the Achterhoekgala in the Concordia hall in Hengelo. The band had rehearsed only five songs and therefore played them twice.

Music and breakthrough

The band makes music in the vein of Tex-Mex, Cajun and zydeco. Cajun is the folk music of the originally French inhabitants of Louisiana, while zydeco leans more on a Black tradition. The language used became Low Saxon. Hans Keuper plays the accordion and sings. The albums include Zeet de jongs from 1992, Veur Pauwen En Poeten from 1993, Den Stroatfox En Andern from 1995, Boekspek from 1997 and SÒH! from 2015. In 1997 Han Mali joined on drums, and after Joly left in 2005 Paul Kemper joined on guitar.

Influence

The band shows that American folk styles can also feel at home in a Dutch regional language. They celebrated anniversaries in 2015, 2020 and 2025, and in 2021 Keuper won the first Willem Sluiter Prize, which is given to someone who draws positive attention to the Achterhoek.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Nen Amerikaan. Notice the accordion, which here brings the sound of Louisiana to the Achterhoek, and the Low Saxon lyrics.
