From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Beatrice Rana is an Italian pianist, born in 1993 in Copertino. She began piano lessons at the age of four and made her debut at nine with a Bach piano concerto, under the direction of Francesco Libetta. She studied with Benedetto Lupo at the Nino Rota Conservatory in Monopoli and with Arie Vardi at the University of Music in Hanover. In 2011 she won first prize at the Montreal International Piano Competition and in 2013 the silver medal at the Van Cliburn Competition.
Music and breakthrough
Rana is signed exclusively to Warner Classics. Her recordings of Tchaikovsky's first piano concerto and Prokofiev's second in 2015, and of Bach's Goldberg Variations in 2017, contributed to the Gramophone Award for Young Artist of the Year in 2017. A nomination for the Classic Brit Awards followed in 2018. Recordings with Chopin, Schumann, Ravel, Stravinsky and Bartók have also appeared. In 2018 she made her debut with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, and in 2019 at Carnegie Hall with, among other things, Chopin's Études Op. 25. In 2025 she organised and played in a gala concert in St Peter's Square in Rome.
Influence
She plays a broad repertoire, from Bach to Prokofiev, and through her recordings and performances draws many young listeners to classical music. In this way she belongs to the new generation of pianists who show how alive the classical piano repertoire is.
