Yo-Yo Ma is een Amerikaanse cellist, in 1955 in Parijs geboren als zoon van Chinese ouders. Zijn vader, een violist en componist, gaf hem op vierjarige leeftijd zijn eerste cellolessen. Op zijn zevende verhuisde het gezin naar Boston en later naar New York. Hij speelde voor president Kennedy, stond op zijn achtste op de Amerikaanse televisie onder leiding van Leonard Bernstein en studeerde aan de Juilliard School. Daarna volgde hij een opleiding antropologie aan Harvard. Hij werd wereldberoemd als solist bij grote orkesten.

Muziek en doorbraak

Ma heeft meer dan negentig albums opgenomen en won twintig Grammy Awards. Zijn bekendste opnames zijn de zes solosuites voor cello van Bach. Op zijn instrument, een Stradivarius uit 1712 die eerder van Jacqueline du Pré was, speelt hij met een gladde, warme toon en veel lyriek. Voor films speelde hij mee in de muziek van Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000), Seven Years in Tibet en Memoirs of a Geisha. Ook werkte hij met Ennio Morricone.

Invloed

Ma wordt een alleseter genoemd, omdat hij ook Argentijnse tango van Astor Piazzolla, Braziliaanse muziek, bluegrass en Chinese melodieën opnam. Hij maakte muziek met Bobby McFerrin, Carlos Santana, Sting, James Taylor en Miley Cyrus. Hij richtte het Silk Road Ensemble op, een collectief van musici uit landen langs de oude zijderoute. Daarmee laat hij zien dat een klassieke solist een brug kan slaan tussen culturen en genres.
