Lalo Schifrin

Lalo Schifrin uit Buenos Aires studeerde klassiek, ook in Parijs, en speelde jazzpiano. In de VS werd hij pianist en arrangeur van Dizzy Gillespie. Vanaf het midden van de jaren zestig werkte hij in Hollywood. Zijn thema voor de tv-serie Mission: Impossible (1966) staat in een ongewone 5/4-maat. Het werd een van de bekendste tv-thema's. In films als Cool Hand Luke (1967), Bullitt (1968) en Dirty Harry (1971) mengde hij jazz, funk, latin en orkest. Zo ontstond de klank van de Amerikaanse politiefilm. Voor Enter the Dragon (1973) voegde hij Aziatische klanken toe aan funkritmes.

Henry Mancini, Lalo Schifrin en John Barry maakten van die jazz een stijlvol, koel geluid voor misdaad en spionage, dat net zo goed op de platenspeler thuis werkte als in de bioscoop.
