Jimmy Smith

Jimmy Smith uit Norristown bij Philadelphia begon als pianist en stapte begin jaren vijftig over op het Hammond B-3-orgel. Hij oefende maanden achter elkaar en speelde de baslijnen met zijn voeten op de pedalen en met zijn linkerhand. Alfred Lion van Blue Note hoorde hem in 1956 en nam hem direct op. Smith speelde bebop en blues op het orgel met de snelheid van een saxofonist en gebruikte de draaiende Leslie-luidspreker voor een zwevende klank. The Sermon! (1958) is een lange, ontspannen blues. Later maakte hij bij Verve albums met bigband. Smith werd het voorbeeld voor bijna alle latere jazzorganisten.
