Het Duke Ellington Orchestra was de bigband van pianist, componist en bandleider Duke Ellington uit Washington. Vanaf de jaren twintig speelde de band in New York, onder meer in de Cotton Club in Harlem. Ellington schreef zijn stukken voor de muzikanten die hij in huis had. Hij wist precies hoe elke solist klonk en gebruikte die klankkleuren als een schilder zijn verf. Zo werd de band een van de belangrijkste orkesten uit de swingtijd.

In 1939 kwam de componist en arrangeur Billy Strayhorn bij de band. Hij schreef Take the A Train, dat in 1941 werd opgenomen en uitgroeide tot de herkenningsmelodie van het orkest. Ook Ellingtons zoon Mercer schreef in die jaren stukken voor de band. Na Duke Ellingtons dood in 1974 nam Mercer de leiding over. Hij toerde met het orkest door Europa en won in 1988 een Grammy met het album Digital Duke. Na hem hielden zijn zoon Paul en kleinzoon Edward de naam levend.
