Christopher Franke

Christopher Franke werd in 1953 geboren en is een Duitse filmcomponist en pionier van de elektronische muziek. Hij studeerde compositie aan het conservatorium van Berlijn, met Karlheinz Stockhausen en John Cage als invloeden. Van 1970 tot 1987 was hij lid van Tangerine Dream. Daar kreeg hij de bijnaam Sequencer King, omdat hij op het podium een analoge sequencer gebruikte. Zijn werk met sequencers geldt als bepalend voor de snelle, hypnotische stijl van de groep, onder meer op het album Phaedra uit 1973, dat de weg baande voor de klassieke Tangerine Dream-klank en voor de Berlijnse school.

Muziek en doorbraak

Met Tangerine Dream schreef hij muziek voor films als Sorcerer, Thief, Risky Business en Legend. Na zijn vertrek volgde een solocarrière. In 1991 opende hij een studio in West Hollywood en schreef hij filmmuziek voor onder meer Universal Soldier, Tarzan and the Lost City en Night of the Running Man. Met Pacific Coast Highway verscheen in 1991 zijn eerste soloalbum, gevolgd door Klemania en Raven in 1993. Een jaar later stichtte hij het label Sonic Images. Voor de televisie schreef hij de muziek voor de sciencefictionserie Babylon 5.

Invloed

Zijn muziek bestaat uit synthesizers en ritmische sequencerlijnen, soms met orkestrale kleuren. Franke bracht de elektronische klank van de Berlijnse school naar de Amerikaanse film en televisie. Daarmee hoort hij tot de musici die synthesizermuziek tot een vaste plek in de filmmuziek maakten.
