The Modern Art of Jazz

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

The Modern Art of Jazz · Tenor saxophonist Zoot Sims recorded this album in 1956 for the label Dawn; it was also released under the title One to Blow On. He plays in a quintet with Bob Brookmeyer on valve trombone, John Williams on piano, Milt Hinton on bass and Gus Johnson on drums.

The repertoire consists of standards, such as September in the Rain and Ghost of a Chance, and of pieces by the band members, such as Down at the Loft by pianist Williams and Our Pad by Brookmeyer and Johnson. Sims wrote the remaining pieces himself. The CD reissue has two bonus tracks. AllMusic gave the album four stars and praised the interplay between Sims and Brookmeyer: according to reviewer Ken Dryden, their lines weave seamlessly together.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Them There Eyes and notice how the tenor saxophone and the valve trombone play around each other, complementing each other's lines.
