Red Headed Stranger

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

After his years at Atlantic, Willie Nelson signed with Columbia, which gave him complete creative freedom. On the way back from a ski holiday in Colorado to Austin, he conceived a Western story around Tale of the Red Headed Stranger, a song that he had played as a disc jockey. He recorded the album in five days at Autumn Sound Studios in Garland, Texas, for little money. The arrangements remained sparse: guitar, piano by his sister Bobbie, drums, harmonica and mandolin.

It is a concept album about a fugitive who kills his wife and her lover. Original songs sit alongside older numbers such as Blue Eyes Crying In the Rain, which as a single became his first number one. The management of Columbia at first thought they were listening to a demo, but the record became a great success with country and pop listeners. The title became a lasting nickname for the singer.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Blue Eyes Crying In the Rain and notice how little is heard: mostly a guitar and a voice, without embellishment.
