Her Trio Her Quartet

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Her Trio Her Quartet · The pianist Toshiko Akiyoshi recorded this album in New York in 1956. It was released on the Storyville label. The sleeve uses art from Joan Miró's Black and Red series. The record consists of two line-ups, a trio and a quartet.

On five tracks she plays with alto saxophonist Boots Mussulli, bassist Wyatt Ruther and drummer Ed Thigpen. On three other tracks she can be heard with bassist Oscar Pettiford and drummer Roy Haynes. The repertoire combines her own work, such as Salute to Shorty and Pea, Bee and Lee, with well-known standards such as All the Things You Are, I'll Remember April and Thou Swell. Kelo was written by J.J. Johnson.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Pea, Bee and Lee, a trio piece by the pianist herself, and notice how piano, bass and drums carry the piece together without a horn.
