Tina Turns the Country On!

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Tina Turns the Country On! is Tina Turner's first solo album, released in September 1974 on United Artists. She made it while she was still part of the Ike & Tina Turner Revue. Her husband Ike Turner wanted to introduce her to a wider audience this way. The record was made at their own studio, Bolic Sound in Inglewood, California, and produced by the Nashville producer Tom Thacker.

Almost everything is covers of country and folk artists, among them Kris Kristofferson, Bob Dylan, Olivia Newton-John, James Taylor and Dolly Parton. Only Bayou Song was written especially for her, by Peter-John Morse. No singles were released. The record did not chart, but earned a Grammy nomination for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. Billboard called it a fine mix of country, folk and soft rock and praised her singing. The album did not appear digitally until November 2023.
