The Stone Roses
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
The Stone Roses · The debut by the Manchester band was recorded mainly between June 1988 and February 1989 at Battery Studios in London, with producer John Leckie, who had been suggested by bassist Mani. Leckie found the demos too fast and the vocals too echoey, and had the group rearrange songs with intros, outros and slower tempos. On I Am the Resurrection he advised against ending with a loud feedback jam as they did live; the song was given a melodic ending.
The record did not catch on immediately, but grew along with the group's gigs and became a key work of the Madchester and baggy scene. The music sounds like guitar pop with melodies in the manner of the Beatles and chiming guitars reminiscent of the Byrds. Elizabeth My Dear borrows its melody from the old song Scarborough Fair. Later critics saw the album as one of the best of all time, and according to a 2006 book more than four million copies have been sold worldwide.
