Pucker!

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Pucker! followed The Happy Album in 1995. In Great Britain it was released on Dojo, in the United States under the title Hairspray on Triple X. Bassist Nick Welsh now produced alone. Guitarist Paul Seacroft played on it as an unofficial fifth member, and Pauline Black and Arthur Gaps Hendrickson once again shared the vocals of The Selecter.

The sound is a moderate version of ska, with elements of new wave and power pop. For the first time the lyrics are sunny and light, with the exception of the gloomy Then She Did. There are two covers: Sugar Town, with B.J. Cole on pedal steel, and Bob Dylan's Rainy Day Women. The album did not make the charts, but the reviews were mostly positive. Trouser Press called the mix innocently weird and surprisingly pleasant.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Sugar Town and try to pick out the pedal steel of guest musician B.J. Cole, an unusual sound for a ska band.
