The Fat of the Land

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

The Fat of the Land · On The Prodigy's third record Liam Howlett wrote almost all the music himself, while Maxim Reality can be heard on two tracks. Recording dragged on for months, because after Firestarter Howlett preferred to play PlayStation rather than sit in the studio. His record company was on his back. The album was released on 30 June 1997 on XL Recordings. The cover shows a horseshoe crab; the title refers to an English expression for living well and richly.

The record brought rave and rock closer together: the magazine Metal Hammer later saw in it the point where the rave club and metal culture collided. Smack My Bitch Up caused an outcry, because an American women's organisation found the song sexist. The group themselves said the song is about doing everything in an intense way. Reviews were glowing and the album topped the charts in the United Kingdom and the United States. It became their best-selling album.
