Reggatta de Blanc

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Reggatta de Blanc, loosely translated White Reggae, is the second album by The Police. The group recorded it in four weeks, spread over several months, again at Surrey Sound with Nigel Gray. A&M wanted a bigger studio and a better-known producer, but the band chose otherwise. There was little new material, so Sting and Stewart Copeland dug out old songs and ideas. The lyrics of Bring On the Night, for example, were already three years old.

The music blends hard rock, British pop, reggae and new wave. The title song is an instrumental that grew out of the live shows and earned the band a Grammy. Message in a Bottle and Walking on the Moon became the group's first British number 1 singles, and the album itself topped the charts in Great Britain, Australia and the Netherlands. A Rolling Stone reviewer wrote that the energy of the rhythmic counterattacks made any objections to the borrowed styles beside the point.

Listening

Listening tip. In Reggatta de Blanc, the instrumental title track, listen to Stewart Copeland's drumming and to how the band builds tension without vocals.
