Here We Go Again!

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Here We Go Again! · In 1959 the Kingston Trio were at the height of the folk revival. For this album the three singers received help from Lou Gottlieb in choosing the songs and arrangements. They rehearsed at the Cocoanut Grove, the club where they were performing at the time. Producer Voyle Gilmore recorded it in Studio B in Los Angeles and for the first time used a technique called double-voicing: the three voices were recorded twice and layered over each other, so that the whole sounded fuller.

The repertoire consists mainly of old folk songs and new songs in that style. Molly Dee was written by John Stewart, who would later replace Dave Guard in the trio. Across the Wide Missouri is their version of Oh Shenandoah, and A Worried Man goes back to a song by the Carter Family. The album spent eight weeks at number one and earned Grammy nominations. That year the group had four albums in the top ten at the same time.

Listening

Listening tip. In A Worried Man, listen to how the three voices together form one full sound. Notice the echo around the instruments.
