Soul on the Rocks
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Soul on the Rocks is the fifth studio album by the Isley Brothers and was released on 29 August 1967 on Tamla, Motown's label in Detroit. It was their second and last record there. The brothers became disappointed with their time at Motown. Groups such as the Temptations and the Four Tops, who sounded slicker than the Isleys, received more promotion.
One of the songs, Behind a Painted Smile, did well on the charts. It made the group popular in the United Kingdom, which the brothers noticed when they toured the country in that period. That gave them new courage. Shortly afterwards they left Motown and re-established their own label, T-Neck. The album thus marks the end of a short, disappointing period.
