Keep On Pushing

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Keep On Pushing was released in 1964 on ABC-Paramount and is The Impressions' most successful album. It reached number 8 on the Billboard 200 and number 4 on the R&B chart. Curtis Mayfield's title song reached number 10 on the Hot 100 and topped the R&B chart.

Johnny Pate wrote the horn arrangements, and the smooth harmony singing gives the album its colour. For Amen, Mayfield took inspiration from the film Lilies of the Field, in which Jester Hairston sang the spiritual. In the studio they began with a swing low sweet chariot and moved into a march-like rhythm. On the sleeve the trio is pushing Mayfield's Jaguar. The album can be seen on the cover of Bob Dylan's Bringing It All Back Home, and Bob Marley included Amen and I Made a Mistake in the Wailers' regular setlist. In 2017 Pitchfork put it at number 167 of the best albums of the 1960s.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Amen and notice how the spiritual is transformed into a soul song with a march-like rhythm and communal singing.
