Dignity of Labour

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Dignity of Labour · For this album the Dutch anarcho-punk band The Ex moved into an empty villa in Wormer. Nearby lay the Van Gelder paper factory, in the war a place of resistance against the German occupation and closed in 1980 after years of unsafe conditions, outdated machines and exploitation. The band wanted to honour the workers. With new drummer Sabien and producer Dolf Planteijdt, it recorded eight songs in his studio, supplemented with recordings in the abandoned factory itself.

The music has machine-like, industrial rhythms with engines, printing presses and pile drivers alongside guitar, double bass, drums, saxophone and marimba. The lyrics tell the life and death of the factory, from its founding in the nineteenth century to its takeover by an American multinational. The album came out as a box with four singles in blank black sleeves, with a booklet and a poster. The cover shows workers at the moment they heard the news of their dismissal.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Sucked Out Chucked Out 1 and notice the rhythms that sound like machines. Try to hear which sounds seem to come from the factory itself.
